Russian air force procurement plans

Some of the largest investments are in military transport aircraft. Frolov and Barabanov mention contracts in place to purchase 20 An-124 heavy transport aircraft starting in 2015, 39 Il-476 (aka Il-76MD-90A) heavy transport aircraft starting in 2014, 11 An-140 light transport aircraft (2 of which have already been delivered), and up to 30 Czech L-410UVP light transport aircraft (7 of which have already been delivered). In addition, there are plans to purchase up to 50 Il-214 MTA multi-role transportation aircraft, which are expected to be ready for production by 2016, and up to 20 An-148 passenger transport planes. Finally, 41 Il-76s and 20 An-124s will undergo modernization. Frolov and Barabanov mention the possibility of a tender for up to 100 Il-112 light transport planes, though this seems unlikely to me given that the MOD has previously rejected this plane in favor of the Antonov design.

The military is also planning to buy up to 30 refueling planes that will be based on the Il-476. There are also plans to buy an unspecified number of A-100 AWACS planes, which are currently under development, and 4 Tu-204 reconnaissance planes. These will serve in conjunction with 12 modernized A-50 AWACS planes and 10 modernized MiG-25RB reconnaissance planes.

In terms of strike aircraft, the air force is placing a big bet on the T-50 fifth generation strike fighter. Sixty of these planes are expected to be procured starting in 2016 (originally planned for 2014). While four T-50 prototypes are already being tested by the air force, by all indications new engines and advanced electronic systems (and especially its avionics) are not yet ready. This may lead to another round of delays in serial production.

Sukhoi to Build Strike, Recon Unmanned Planes

Russian aircraft maker Sukhoi is to focus on creating reconnaissance and strike unmanned air vehicles (UAV) in the near future, United Aircraft Corporation President Mikhail Pogosyan said at the Zhuhai Airshow China exhibition on Tuesday.

Sukhoi, which has historically designed fighter and ground attack aircraft but now also builds some civil aircraft, is part of UAC, a holding covering most of Russia's aircraft industry.

"UAVs are a strategic avenue for development for UAC, and Sukhoi is focused on creating reconnaissance and strike UAVs. But our firm plans on this are in the future," he said.

Previous UAVs created for Russia's amed forces have been produced by Tranzas and Sokol, in addition to Sukhoi.

Sukhoi has designs on its website for a series of unmanned aircraft known as Zond, optimised for the carriage of surveillance and synthetic-aperture radars and electro-optical sensors.

In 2011, Sukhoi won a contract to develope a heavy strike UAV with a mass of around 20 tons, Fedutinov said. Another Russian fighter aircraft design bureau, RAC MiG, will also be involved in this program, MiG's CEO Sergei Korotkov told Russian media earlier this year.

MiG showed a demonstrator strike UAV design known as Skat at the MAKS airshow in Moscow in 2007.

St. Petersburg-based Tranzas and Kazan-based Sokol won a tender in October 2011 to create two UAV systems with a mass of one ton and five tons respectively.

JSC IRKUT Corporation (part of JSC United Aircraft Corporation) handed over the first 2 Su-30SM fighters to the Russian Air Force. The delivery-acceptance act was signed on November 22 at the Irkutsk aviation plant – branch of JSC IRKUT Corporation.

Oleg Demchenko, President of JSC IRKUT Corporation, at the signing ceremony said: “We’ve been working for export for many years, and now started to deliver aircraft to the Motherland. 9 of our new Yak-130s are flying at the Borisoglebsk training center to date, and now we are delivering the first 2 Su-30SM fighters to the Russian Air Force. This is a historic event for our team, for the Sukhoi company and for the whole United Aircraft Corporation”.

Alexander Harchevsky, Chief of the Military research and training center named after N.Zhukovski and Y.Gagarin said at the event: “Su-30SM will improve combat capabilities of the Russian Air Force”. The famous military pilot, who headed the Center of retraining pilots named after V.Chkalov for many years, having experience in piloting the type of fighters mentioned such capabilities of the Su-30SM as simultaneously engage and destroy multiple targets as well as supermaneuverability. “It’s very important that the aircraft is in serial production and will be supplied to the Air Force not by units, but squadrons” – stressed Maj.Gen Harchevsky.

Su-30SM multirole supermaneuverable fighter is the further development of the Su-30MK combat aircraft family. JSC Sukhoi Design Bureau’ specialists designed the fighter in accordance with the requirements of the Russian Air Force in terms of radar system, radio and recognition system, ejection seats and a number of support systems. The weaponry configuration was changed as well.

The contract on 30 multirole fighters delivery by 2015 was signed between the Russian Ministry of Defence and JSC IRKUT Corporation in March 2012.

Russian Military to Get 30 More Su-30SM Fighter Jets

The Russian Defense Ministry and the Irkut aircraft maker have signed a contract on the delivery of an additional 30 Su-30SM multirole fighter jets to the Russian Air Force by 2016.

The first contract between the Defense Ministry and Irkut for the delivery of 30 Su-30SMs was signed in March. The Russian Air Force received the first two Su-30SM aircraft on November 22.

“In line with the new contract, Irkut will build 30 additional aircraft of this type for the Defense Ministry by 2016,” the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Su-30SM is the latest development of the twin-seat Su-30 jet fighter family, itself a derivative of the long-serving single-seat Sukhoi Su-27, one of the air force's most important warplanes.

The new aircraft has an improved radar, communications and identification-friend-or-foe system, new ejection seat and new weapons. It also has thrust-vectoring engine nozzles and canard foreplanes, providing super-maneuverability at low airspeeds.

Sukhoi Delivered 6 Su-35S Fighters to the Ministry of Defense & Sukhoi Delivered Su-34 Frontline Bombers to the Russian Air Force http://www.defense-aerospace.com/article-view/release/141356/first-six-su_35ss%2C-five-su_34s-to-russian-air-force.html

Sukhoi delivered 6 Su-35S production multi-functional fighter aircraft to the Ministry of Defense of Russia. The official delivery act was signed at the Sukhoi’s Komsomolsk-on-Amur aircraft production association (KnAAPO).

Thus the Sukhoi Company has completely fulfilled the 2012 State Defense Order for that aircraft. The fighters will fly to the airbase of location in the nearest future.

Today five serial Su-34 frontline bombers went up in the sky from the runway airport of the Novosibirsk Aircraft Production Association (NAPO) of Sukhoi and off to the place of their deployment at the Western military district air base in Voronezh.

The aircraft delivery is carried out in the framework of the State defense order 2012.

The state contract for supply of 32 Su-34 frontline bombers to the Russian Defense Ministry was signed in 2008.

In March 2012 another state contact was signed for supply of 92 aircraft up to the year 2020. This is one of the largest contracts for combat aircraft supplies under the State armaments program for 2011 – 2020.

Its fulfillment will allow replacing largely Su-24 frontline bombers currently in service by new aircraft in the nearest future. It also provides for an extended high production load of Sukhoi Company and related enterprises.

Technical and combat capabilities of the aircraft supplied are in full conformance with the Air Force demands. They were proved during the state joint testing of the airplane completed in September 2011.

The Su-34 can effectively attack land-based, sea- and airborne targets by day and night in all weathers using the entire suite of its airborne munitions, including high-precision types. In terms of operational capabilities this is a 4+ generation aircraft. Its active safety system, along with the newest computers, provides extra capabilities for the pilot and navigator to perform precise bombing and to maneuver under enemy fire. The excellent aerodynamics, large capacity internal fuel tanks, fuel-efficient bypass engines with a digital control system, in-flight refueling device and add-on fuel tanks enable the aircraft to fly long distances close to those of medium strategic bombers.

The aircraft features an outstanding flight performance, maintainability and maneuverability. It has long-range aiming systems, modern on-board communication and information exchange system with ground control stations, ground troops and surface ships as well as between aircraft of the group.

The Su-34 is armed with highly effective long-range air-to-surface and air-to-air guided weapons enabling multi-channel operational employment. It is equipped with a highly intelligent system of radar countermeasures and defense. The Su-34 has a sophisticated survival system, including an armored cockpit. The aircraft can perform missions at a low altitude in bypass and fly-by modes. There are immediate plans to increase the combat potential of the aircraft with new weapons.

‘Russia’s after Sixth Generation unmanned attack jet’ ....

Published time: August 26, 2013 16:00

Edited time: August 27, 2013 17:11

Russia is actively developing an unmanned sixth generation aircraft, said a former Air Force commander. Unlike NATO allies who will use American F-35 5Gs, self-sufficiency is an absolute must for Russia, said the commander, so 6G evolution is inevitable.

With a fifth generation PAK-FA heavy attack jet already developed and planned to enter service in 2016, Russian aviation is also looking to the future of air combat, conducting research and development for aircraft that can dominate airspace by the mid-21st century.

Ahead of the MAKS-2013 airshow due to start on August 27, the former Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force, Army General Pyotr Deynekin, gave an interview to the RIA news agency, in which he made vague, yet far-reaching remarks about the future Russian Air Force.

Deynekin admitted that work on the sixth generation long range assault jet is in “active phase” and “most probably” the aircraft will be unmanned. While some NATO member countries are planning to ‘forego’ development of a fifth generation fighter jet, buying American F-35’s instead and developing a sixth generation aircraft from scratch, Russia has no possibility to economize in that way, he said.

“We must do this serious undertaking on our own, so jumping over a [aircraft development] generation is hardly possible,” Pyotr Deynekin told RIA.

The former commander refused to compare the combat characteristics of the PAK-FA jet, the American F-22 Raptor and the Chinese J-20, fifth generation jet in development.“Only real practice can expose these aircrafts strengths and weaknesses,” he said.

At the same time Deynekin mentioned that in a real combat situation, the PAK-FA would make use of all the stealth equipment on board, making the aircraft undetectable by enemy radars. Still, the general admitted, making an absolutely undetectable aircraft appears to be an impossible task.

Deynekin also said that in his view the super-maneuverability of the PAK-FA is a big plus as despite advanced capabilities of modern air-to-air missiles, traditional ‘dog-fights’ will still be an option in the future. Therefore an ace pilot will need reliable technology on board and perfect flying skills.

The retired general was of the opinion that arming the PAK-FA with 400-kilometer range air-to-air missiles was excess weaponry more suitable for a tactical bomber rather than a fighter jet.

Pyotr Deynekin particularly stressed that Russian military thinking does not imply intent of aggressive action on foreign territory, but takes into consideration the size of the Russian Federation where the long-range capabilities of the PAK-FA are an absolute necessity.

In spite of the fact that future wars would be a testing ground for new kinds of air assault, the military goals of combatants won’t just be achieved by the Air Force, Deynekin acknowledged.

Earlier this month Russia’s possibly most awarded test pilot, Sergey Bogdan, who initially got the PAK-FA airborne, said that a new generation of fighter aircraft could not be expected soon.

“One would think that technology is moving forward fast but it has taken 35 years to get from the fourth generation fighter jet to the fifth generation. I believe the next generation fighter will evolve no earlier than in 15 years,” said Bogdan, who is busy preparing an air display of several PAK-FA jets for MAKS-2013. “Pilot-in-the-loop aircrafts will last for a long period of time,” Bogdan predicted.

According to American experts, a sixth generation fighter jet would have to display - so far these are only generally outlined characteristics - ‘extreme’ stealth, multimode fighting capabilities, the ability to destroy any kind of target in all flying regimes, from subsonic to up to 5 Mach, – about 6,000 kilometers per hour - possible fuselage self-healing potential, combined with ‘morphing’ and smart skins capabilities. The 6G aircraft is expected to boast extremely far-reaching sensors that would give a highly detailed picture of the battlefield, where every highly networked 6G aircraft would be a part of a bigger network. The most enthusiastic observers believe that one day such aircraft will be armed with ‘directed energy’ weapons.

In the US the sixth generation fighter jet program is generally dubbed the Next Generation Tactical Aircraft / Next Generation TACAIR, and is not scheduled to enter service anytime earlier than in 2030.

Accelerazione .... ma con qualche riserva ....

Pace Of Russian Rearmament Quickens ....

A massive modernization push is imminent for Russian aerospace defense: the air force alone could receive 4.5 trillion rubles ($136 billion) over 10 years, about one-quarter of the overall drive to upgrade Russia's Soviet-era weaponry.
The money will help replace about 70% of the air force fleet by 2020 and position it to acquire the Sukhoi T-50—a fighter advanced enough to rival the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter—as well as a stealthy, long-range bomber, and to overhaul its surface-to-air missile stockpile.
However, analysts caution that the plan's financial scope may be unrealistic.
