Pakistani schoolgirl attacked by Taliban sent to UK for treatment

 

The spokesman said in a statement that 14-year-old Malala Yousufzai, whose shooting has drawn condemnation abroad and at home, will require prolonged care to fully recover physically and psychologically.

 

An air ambulance transporting Yousufzai, provided by the United Arab Emirates, had departed from Islamabad and was heading for the United Kingdom, said the spokesman.

 

"The panel of doctors recommended that Malala be shifted abroad to a UK center which has the capability to provide integrated care to children who have sustained severe injury," said the spokesman in a statement.

British general reports on Afghanistan progress

 

The General began by saying that it might come as a surprise, given that some of the media commentary on the Afghan campaign had not been one of unmitigated success, that his message was essentially one of good news.

He said that ISAF was stepping back from the combat role that it had had in the early days and was increasingly mentoring and advising the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) who were successfully taking over that responsibility. As a result of disengaging from the combat role, ISAF was suffering between 38 and 40 per cent fewer casualties when compared to last year's figures.

Around three-quarters of the Afghan population now lived in areas of transition where the ANSF were taking the lead in providing security.

TALIBAN fighters are being forced to curb attacks using improvised explosive devices — after the cost of making them QUADRUPLED in the past year.

Insurgents building lethal booby traps now pay up to £500 for the bombs — £375 more than in 2011, the deputy commander of the Nato mission revealed yesterday.

The price rise has seen a 30 per cent fall in IED attacks in areas where British troops are deployed in Afghanistan.

Lt Gen Adrian Bradshaw said the cost hike was due to equipment shortages. The seizure of lucrative narcotics and a poor poppy harvest also hit insurgents.

Due mesi dopo il ritiro dei bersaglieri dalla “valle delle rose”, il contingente militare italiano è tornato in Gulistan per sostenere l’avvicendamento della guarnigione dell’esercito afghano, 250 militari che hanno “ereditato” la base avanzata “Ice”. Il 16 ottobre si è infatti conclusa con successo l’operazione Grasshoppers, che ha visto il trasporto di un battaglione del 207° Corpo afghano da Farah alla base in Gulistan da parte di una task-force di quindici elicotteri formata da due velivoli Mi17 dell’aviazione afghana, quattro elicotteri d’attacco AW-129 Mangusta, un multiruolo NH-90 dell’Aviazione dell’Esercito, sei cargo CH-47 Chinook forniti in ugual misura da Italia, Spagna e Stati Uniti. L’Us army ha messo in campo anche due elicotteri d’attacco AH64- Apache. L’operazione, coordinata dalla Task Force South basata a Farah e destinata all’avvicendamento di oltre 250 militari dell’esercito afghano schierati in Gulistan, si è sviluppata per tre giorni con nove missioni che hanno totalizzato oltre cento ore di volo. La prima fase della Grasshoppers ha visto l’air assault di un plotone di alpini del 3° reggimento che hanno garantito la sicurezza della zona di atterraggio in prossimità della base operativa avanzata presidiata in passato dalla Task Force South East. Nella seconda fase si sono succeduti i voli di trasporto dei Mi-17 (nella foto) e dei CH-47 che in più mandate hanno trasportato gli uomini del kandak (battaglione) del 207° Corpo accompagnati dai Military Advisor Team (consiglieri militari italiani) e da un plotone del 9° reggimento alpini. L’avvicendamento e il rifornimento delle unità afghane in Gulistan deve essere effettuato per via aerea poiché la strade che congiunge il distretto a Bakwa è troppo insidiosa per essere attraversata dai convogli, infestata da ordigni improvvisati talebani e a rischio continuo di imboscate. Oltre sessanta i militari impiegati dalla Task Force Fenice dell’Aviazione dell’Esercito, che ha sostenuto lo sforzo principale nel corso della più complessa e articolata operazione di volo compiuta dal Regional Command West, il comando a guida italiana responsabile per la regione occidentale dell’Afghanistan comandato dal generale Dario Ranieri.

The global attention bestowed on a Pakistani schoolgirl shot by the Taliban has sparked outcry amongst many Afghans dismayed by what they say is the unequal response to the plight of their women and children.

"Every day an Afghan girl is abused, raped, has acid thrown on her face and mutilated. Yet no one remembers or acknowledges these girls," Elay Ershad, who represents the nomadic Kuchi people in Afghan parliament, told Reuters.

 

Echoing concerns of other prominent Afghan women, Ershad said the government took no real interest in women's rights, instead using the issue for political gain and currying favor with Western backers, a claim Kabul has dismissed as untrue.

Britain to double number of drones in Afghanistan: report

 

Britain is to double the number of armed drone aircraft flying combat and surveillance operations in Afghanistan, the Guardian reported on Tuesday.

In a new squadron of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), five Reaper drones will be sent to Afghanistan and be in operation within six weeks, with control coming, for the first time, from terminals and screens in Britain, the newspaper said.

Oct 22/12: All 10 to deploy. The Guardian reports that XIII Squadron being stood up on Oct 26/12 will operate its 5 Reapers from a new control facility at RAFB Waddington. They’ll have 3 control terminals at Waddington, and all 5 UAVs will deploy to Afghanistan. The 5 Reapers already in service there will continue operation from the USAF’s Creech AFB, NV, but Britain wants to consolidate all of its MQ-9 operations to Waddington later on.

XIII Squadron’s deployment will place all 10 British Reapers in Afghanistan. The question is how many of them, if any, will remain there after 2014, when all NATO combat operations are due to end.

Afghanistan: un Alpino ucciso e tre feriti nell'attacco di oggi a Bakwa

 

Il Caporale Tiziano Chierotti, 24enne di San Remo (Imperia), uno dei quattro militari rimasti feriti nello scontro a fuoco di oggi a Bakwa, è deceduto alle ore 19.45 locali.

Il militare - effettivo dal 2008 al 2° Reggimento Alpini di Cuneo, inquadrato nella Brigata Alpina “Taurinense” - gravemente ferito all’addome, era stato trasferito dall’ospedale da campo di Farah alla struttura sanitaria di livello superiore di Camp Bastion, ma è deceduto per il repentino aggravarsi delle condizioni cliniche, nonostante i tentativi di rianimazione.

Gli altri tre militari coinvolti nell’evento non sono in pericolo di vita.

Afghanistan: blindato italiano coinvolto in esplosione, illesi gli occupanti

 

Oggi alle ore 11.21 locali (08.51 italiane) un mezzo blindato ‘Cougar’ della Task Force South è rimasto coinvolto nell’esplosione di un ordigno rudimentale nei pressi di Kormaleq, a circa quaranta chilometri da Farah.

 

Indenne il personale a bordo del blindato, che ha protetto i sei occupanti, riportando soltanto danni alla parte anteriore. I militari saranno comunque sottoposti alla prevista visita medica al rientro in base.

 

Il ‘Cougar’, mezzo blindato speciale con protezione anti-esplosivo in dotazione alle unità del genio, faceva parte di una pattuglia della Task Force South di stanza a Farah, impegnata da tre giorni in un’operazione a sostegno delle forze di sicurezza afgane per il controllo del territorio nella provincia meridionale di Farah.

 

Le unità di specialisti del Genio del Regional Command West sono integrate in tutte le operazioni congiunte con la polizia e l’esercito di Kabul, e forniscono le capacità di ricognizione e rimozione di ordigni esplosivi improvvisati lungo i principali assi di comunicazione.

 

Nell’ultimo mese sono stati 37 gli interventi dei team specializzati del 3° e del 32° Genio in cui sono stati rinvenuti e distrutti ordigni rudimentali, i quali rappresentano la minaccia principale per le forze di sicurezza locali e internazionali oltre che per la popolazione civile.

Gentile Spezia, temo che la mia posizione sull'Afghanistan e simili la deluderà. Non sono un'integralista, meno che mai sul pacifismo. Credo che siano sciagurate le società, più o meno affluenti come quella europea e italiana in particolare, che scelgano di bandire la guerra dalla propria cultura: perché è un'utopia (oltre 60 anni di pace in Europa sono troppi pochi per saltare a una conclusione univoca) che rende inermi ma procura un ottimo alibi per non darsi i mezzi (nemmeno psicologici) di difendere il proprio modello e la propria identità qualora un giorno fosse necessario. Senza contare che è facile essere pacifisti quando, grazie alla Nato, ci sono gli Stati Uniti (fino a quando?) a sobbarcarsi oneri e costi della nostra difesa. L'Afghanistan (come altre missioni militari, Iraq, Libia etc.), è una brutta storia. Era cominciata con le migliori intenzioni all'indomani dell'11 settembre e con il supporto del mandato Onu per sostenere il Governo locale e sconfiggere la minaccia talebana. È finita con una bruciante sconfitta occidentale. Perché? Perché anche in Afghanistan, come altrove, si è andati come dei "kamikaze", senza minimamente conoscere cultura, complessità e sensibilità locali. Per ignoranza e semplicismo, siamo diventati dei "conquistatori" (non gli italiani, sembra), o comunque così siamo stati percepiti contrariamente alle nostre intenzioni e allo scopo della missione. Risultato: abbiamo consegnato il Paese ai talebani e destabilizzato il Pakistan. In breve l'Occidente si è tragicamente ridicolizzato facendosi male da solo. Non perché i talebani siano barbari invincibili ma perché siamo stati incapaci di conquistare il consenso tra la popolazione vincendone paure, pregiudizi, xenofobia. Da tempo il ritiro è previsto gradualmente per tutti i membri della coalizione internazionale. È sempre una pena vedere i giovani morire ma questa volta almeno non è la coscrizione obbligatoria a metterne a rischio la vita. L'Italia può certo accelerare la propria uscita. L'importante, almeno per me, è che non lo faccia inseguendo sogni impossibili come la pace per decreto in un mondo senza guerre. Sarebbe bello ma non sarebbe realistico.

onestamente, poi, non capisco perchè ci si barrica sempre dietro "italiani brava gente, gli altri sono dei fessi" e si veda il disimpegno come una sconfitta... non è che forse qualcuno si pensava a faccetta nera parte seconda?
