CAROLINA MOON B-17G-75-BO 43-37907

490th Bomb Group Bomb 851st Bomb Squadron

Assigned to 490th Bomb Group at Eye in early July 1944, Carolina Moon survived a full year of combat over northern Europe before returning the the USA. Cowan painted a superbly slinky nude reclining on a crescent moon and placed his signature just within the curve at bottom right. With an impressive tally of 78 combat sortie marks emblazoned on its nose and one swastika denoting a fighter kill, the B17 took off from Prestwick as part of Operation Home Run. Lt Lancaster's crew plus passengers flew to Bradley Field on 9th July 1945. By 2nd December Carolina Moon had been transfered to RFC Kingman in Arizona where its magnificent nose art was melted down for pots and pans.

RALL

Bf-109G-1

8./JG52

Flown by Oberleutanant Günther Rall

Immediately after Rall's 36 enemy kill in the Soviet eastern front, he was shot down and found himself with his spinal column broken in three places. Partially paralyzed, doctors told him he would never fly again. Nine mounths later, Rall was in the cockpit of 109s. He survived the war with 275 victories and frequently makes appearences in the US.

This is one of Rall's Me-109s, Black 13 with the III group emblem. He was also shot down in this a/c by the 56FG.

The 415 Squadron

Four hundred and Fightin’ fifteen Squadron was formed on August 20, 1941 in Thorney Island, Hampshire, England as Canada's fourth Coastal Command and first Torpedo Bombing Squadron. The Squadron, under its first commanding officer W/C "Wally" Wurtele, received its first aircraft, the Bristol Beaufort, on September 2, 1941. Flight training began within a week and by October, 415 Squadron was also serving temporarily as an operational training unit for general reconnaissance and torpedo bomber crews. From its modest beginning, 415 Squadron developed a reputation as one of the finest, most professional Anti-Submarine Warfare Squadrons, and has demonstrated time and again that dedication and perseverance are the most effective weapons.
