President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday said he wants to cancel the plan for a new Air Force One design.

At 8:52 a.m. EST, Trump tweeted: “Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order !”

Trump’s message echoes one of the first moves made in 2009 by then newly-elected President Barack Obama.

At the time, the US Navy planned to replace a fleet of aging Sikorsky VH-3D with Lockheed Martin/AgustaWestland VH-71s, but costs had soared to $6.1 billion.

Only a month after his inauguration, Obama said the VH-71 acquisition was an “example of the procurement process gone amok”.

The procurement was later cancelled, with the USN finally switching to Lockheed/Sikorsky VH-92As for the so called “Marine One” fleet.

Non penso proprio... secondo me, il buon Trump sta cavalcando l'onda populista per fare bella figura col contribuente americano (sempre molto attento a come vengono spesi i soldini) e per ricontrattare il prezzo con Boeing. Non penso che sia plausibile una cancellazione di una commessa del genere anche e soprattutto per motivi industriali

US President-elect Donald Trump says he will lead pricing negotiations with Boeing on a programme to replace two 747-200-derived VC-25As serving as executive transports also known as Air Force One.

“That’s what I’m here for,” Trump said during an interview with NBC on 7 December.

“I’m going to negotiate prices. Planes are too expensive and we’re going to get the prices down. And if we don’t get the prices down we’re not going to order them. We’re going to stay with what we have.”

E perché non usare il B-21 quale aereo presidenziale ?

 

 

A panel of aerospace and defense analysts has proposed ditching the U.S. Air Force’s Boeing 747-8-based Air Force One in favor of the Northrop Grumman B-21 stealth bomber, or a less-costly militarized Boeing 737 fleet.

The group, writing for Wright Williams & Kelly (WWK), a cost management software and consulting company, says in a new report that President Donald Trump’s concerns about the massive cost of modifying two or three end-of-the-line 747-8 commercial airliners into military-grade presidential transports could be significantly reduced by recasting the requirements, which demand four engines and accommodations for an entourage of 70-plus passengers.

By taking into account the safety and reliability of modern twin-engine aircraft, the Air Force would have a wide range of alternatives to study, instead of being limited to the Boeing 747-8 or Airbus A380.

Con tutto il rispetto per questi analisti, mi par proprio che siano fuori di cranio…e il primo di aprile è lontano.

Si, il 747 costa un botto e Trump ci twitta sopra come si conviene alla politica populista usa e getta di questi anni, ma se non è poi così trendy mettere il presidente e il suo staff in un costosissimo remake di un velivolo al crepuscolo della sua ultradecennale carriera, non è che sia poi così appropriato fare visite di stato a bordo di un bombardiere...Vogliamo parlarne di quanto sia sicuro, comodo, economico e politicamente corretto un B-21 che porta il presidente al G7 o peggio in visita in Vaticano?

 

Il 737? Ce lo vedo proprio…L’A321 va stretto all’Italia, figuriamoci un pari-classe per gli USA… Con buona pace dei 4 motori che poi si, effettivamente è una fisima tutta americana che rischia di non trovare più seguito nel mondo dell’aviazione civile ormai fatto quasi solo da bimotori. Se andava bene il VC-25 con 4 vecchi CF6, non vedo perché preoccuparsi ad usare un bimotore con motori di ultima generazione.

 

Ma usare un Boeing 777 con due GE9X da 47 tonnellate di spinta ciascuno e senza troppi optional pareva troppo brutto? Di base non costa di meno, anzi, ma almeno li vale quei soldi...

The Air Force has created a new position to lead the Air Force One replacement program and has chosen Brig. Gen. Duke Richardson to do the job, the Dayton Daily News reported.

Richardson - who was nominated for a second star in February - is currently executive manager of the Air Force’s tanker directorate at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, where he has overseen development of the service’s KC-46 tanker.

Boeing reimbursed the US government $4 million after three company mechanics damaged the oxygen system for a VC-25A, a modified VIP 747-200 also known as Air Force One, the US Air Force says in a new accident investigation report.

The VC-25A was damaged as three mechanics checked for leaks in the oxygen system, according to a summary of the Accident Investigation Board report (*) released on 9 May.

Al Senato non hanno preso bene la furbata di risparmiare soldi eliminando il requisito del rifornimento in volo dal prossimo Air Force One (di fatto un passo indietro rispetto all'attuale, che non l'ha certo utilizzato, se non altro perchè nel frattempo nessuno ha scatenato la Terza Guerra Mondiale...).

Responsabile parrebbe essere la smania della Casa Bianca di prendere decisioni senza condividerle e senza analizzare conseguenze che vadano al di là dei costi (per la verità "un pochino" alti...).

Air Force Cancels $24 Million Air Force One Refrigerator Contract ...

The Air Force’s $24 million plan for refrigerators on Air Force One is no longer running.

Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.) said in a statement Monday afternoon (*) that Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson told him the sole source contract has been canceled, and the service is reviewing more affordable options.

“Even with the understanding that the Air Force One mission brings with it unique requirements and challenges, a $24 million sole-source contract just didn’t pass the smell test,” Courtney said in a statement.

Wilson, in her letter, said the Air Force and the White House Military Office decided to terminate the effort, but it could be reviewed if the Presidential Aircraft Replacement program is delayed.

KC-46 Program Finishes Tests Required for First Delivery .....

The KC-46 program in early July finished the flight testing required for the first delivery of the aircraft in October, the service and Boeing (*) announced Friday.  
On July 6, Boeing and the Air Force finished all of the test points for the KC-46’s Remote Vision System, which controls the refueling boom, along with receiver certifications for the F-16 and C-17. 
Lastly, the KC-46 in June finished testing for receiving fuel from the KC-135. 
These tests were the minimum required for the long-delayed delivery of the first KC-46. 
“With this milestone complete, the test program demonstrated a level of maturity that positions Boeing to deliver, and the Air Force to accept, an aircraft by the end of October 2018,” Air Force Service Acquisition Executive Will Roper said in a release. 
The test program is now moving on to the follow-on receiver testing and certifications that are required for operational testing, slated to begin next year, the release states.
