The first serial produced Swedish Gripen E aircraft has now entered the joint verification and validation programme. 
To mark this important step in the programme Saab showed the aircraft to the Swedish Defence Minister, representatives from The Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) and Swedish Armed Forces.
The aircraft performed its first flight in November and is now part of the joint verification and validation programme, a cooperation between Saab, the Swedish Armed Forces and FMV, where the aircraft and its functions are tested all the way from basic systems up to full operational capabilities.

J-11 Cinesi contro Gripen Tailandesi.

Risultato dei combattimenti simulati non necessariamente scontato: sulle corte distanze i Gripen si fanno male, mentre sulle lunghe a prenderle di brutto sono i J-11.

Da sottolineare come l'addestramento conti parecchio e possa spostare gli equilibri determinati dalle macchine.

“We’re really now accelerating our test programme,” says Eddy de la Motte, Saab’s head of Gripen E/F business unit, adding: “we’re now shifting focus to more testing of tactical systems and the sensors.” 
He notes that the aircraft’s Leonardo-supplied radar and infrared search and track equipment and Saab-developed electronic warfare suite are not only meeting expectations, but “performing better than expected”.

Sono iniziati i collaudi in volo del nuovo radar AESA di Saab ...

Verrà offerto agli attuali utilizzatori di Gripen C/D ... ma non se ne prevede, al momento, l'impiego sui Gripen E/F ...

Saab has flown its active electronically scanned array (AESA) X-band radar in a Gripen fighter for the first time, the company announced on April 24. 
The flight took place at Saab’s Linköping airfield on April 8. 
During the 90-minute sortie undertaken by a JAS 39D trials aircraft (serial 800), the radar was successfully tested against aerial targets of opportunity and a range of ground targets. 
Speaking to AIN, Anders Carp, senior vice president and head of Saab's Surveillance business area, noted that the radar demonstrated good capability and stability throughout the test mission.

On September 24, the first Brazilian Gripen E, designated by Brazilian Air Force (FAB) as F-39 Gripen, concluded its first flight in Brazil.

The aircraft flew from the airport in Navegantes to Embraer´s facility in Gavião Peixoto.

The official presentation of the aircraft is scheduled to take place during the Aviator’s Day and the Brazilian Air Force Day ceremony in Brasilia, celebrated on the 23rd of October.

On September 24 the first production Gripen E from Saab’s Linköping, Sweden factory arrived at its new home at Gavião Peixoto, where Saab and Embraer have established the Gripen Design and Development Center, with a co-located flight test center.
The aircraft’s journey began with it being loaded - fully assembled - aboard a vessel at Norrköping for the transatlantic voyage. 
It arrived in Brazil on September 20 at the port of Navegantes, where it was craned ashore. 
After being towed on its own wheels at nighttime the short distance to the local civilian airport, the aircraft underwent ground tests before taking off on the final leg of its journey to Gavião Peixoto.
It was the first time that the new fighter for the Força Aerea Brasileira (FAB, Brazilian air force) had flown in Brazilian airspace. 
The ferry flight was accompanied by a pair of Northrop F-5M fighters, while Caracal and Black Hawk helicopters were held at readiness should any emergencies arise.

The Swedish defense ministry published a 181-page document on October 14 that outlines a defense bill to be put before the Riksdag (parliament). Having gained cross-party support, the bill is scheduled to become law on Feb. 1, 2021. 
Known as Totalförsvaret (total defence) 2021-25, the bill covers the largest increase in defense spending in Sweden for many decades. Funding levels are to increase by SEK27.5 billion ($3.1 billion) compared with 2020.

In terms of Flygvapnet (the Swedish air force), the bill proposes that the current force structure of six combat aircraft squadrons will be maintained through the 2021-25 period. 
Four will convert to the JAS 39E Gripen as they are delivered, while two will retain the JAS 39C/D
Under initial plans, the Gripen E was to have replaced the C/D completely, but in recent times it has been seen as increasingly likely that C/Ds would be retained in view of growing regional tensions. 
The bill expects the Gripen C/D to be “an important part of the war organization beyond 2030,” while noting that C/Ds can also be employed for advanced training. 
Currently, Sweden has 60 Gripen Es on order, and the bill gives no details of future Gripen numbers, although it is estimated that the force will comprise around 90-100 fighters.

Saab ha tenuto un incontro ad alto livello con le autorità di Brasile e Svezia per presentare i primi sei velivoli Gripen E di produzione in serie, che hanno lasciato la fabbrica e sono entrati nella fase di consegna.

The Hungarian government and Sweden’s FMV defense materiel administration have concluded negotiations over the upgrade of Hungary’s leased Saab JAS 39C/D Gripen fighters to the latest Mission System (MS) 20 Block 2 configuration. 
Under the deal—announced by Saab on January 12—the aircraft will receive enhancements to sensors and communications, as well as expanded weapons options.
Improvements to the PS-05/A Mk 4 radar increase the sensor’s air-to-air target tracking range, as well as other performance improvements. 
They include better clutter suppression and enhanced detection capability against small aerial targets. 
The radar also offers growth potential for additional air-to-air and air-to-ground modes.

I primi due caccia Gripen E di produzione in serie sono arrivati in Brasile ...

The first two serial production Gripen E fighters, called F-39 Gripen by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), are in Brazil. 
The aircraft arrived in the country last Friday, April 1st, at the port of Navegantes, and today completed their first flight in the country. 
The two aircraft flew from Navegantes International Airport to the Gripen Flight Test Center at the Embraer plant in Gavião Peixoto.
The flights were conducted by two Brazilian Air Force pilots, who participated in training in Sweden. 
The flight to Gavião Peixoto lasted approximately 50 minutes and took place as planned.

Brazil is set to order four Saab-Embraer F-39E jets in addition to the 36 already purchased in 2014 under a $4.7 billion contract. 
The country is also considering ordering another batch of at least 30 F-39E fighters — the local designation of the JAS 39E Gripen NG.
Sweden’s Gripen NG was officially selected in 2013 to provide the Brazilian Air Force with an advanced, fourth-generation-plus fighter jet under the F-X program. 
The decision followed a protracted process launched in the mid-1990s, which suffered several delays and was at one point suspended by then-President Fernando Henriquez Cardoso in 2002. 
It was restarted in 2008 by then-President Luiz da Silva.

Brazil is set to officially add the Saab Gripen NG, locally designated as F-39, to the combat fleet of its air force on Dec. 19.
The first of five F-39s, delivered from Sweden between December 2021 and April 2022, are now at Anapolis Air Base near the federal capital Brasilia. 
They were initially used for testing and training flying from Sao Paulo and other places.
Now the Gripens will become operational and officially part of the line-up of fighter jets belonging to the 1st Aviation Group, taking charge of regular peacetime tasks. 
Operating from Anapolis, this unit is tasked with the defense and control of air space over nearby Brasilia, the federal capital city of Brazil.

Beh, dopo molti anni dal lancio non si puo' dire che il Gripen abbia avuto grandi successi di vendite all' estero. Piccole vendite in Sud Africa e Thailandia, poi questo brasiliano...Ricordiamoci che gli aerei di Ungheria e Rep. Ceca sono solo in leasing. E' un tipo di aereo, non certamente a buon mercato, che pare essere, come si suol dire, "ne' carne ne' pesce". Poi la Svezia e SAAB sembrano non avere serie, sufficienti forze di convincimento per grandi successi. SAAB, fra l' altro, ha fallito clamorosamente con la produzione civile e, in Svizzera, ne sappiamo qualcosa con Crossair e i suoi pur sempre apprezzati 340 A e B e 2000. Mah, affari loro!...

Ogni Stato fa le sue scelte di politica economica e militare. In Svizzera ci sono ampie capacita' industriali dalla seconda meta' dell'800. Si e' scelta per parecchi anni anche una parziale produzione indigena di aerei da combattimento. Maggior esempio: il caso dell' FFA P-16, caccia progettato ad Altenrhein dalla FFA appunto, ordinato in 100 esemplari per le allora Truppe di aviazione e DCA. Ritardi e un paio di incidenti hanno fatto disdire il contratto e la Confederazione ha acquistato un primo lotto di HS Hunter in GB, ottimi aerei ma, forse, inferiori al prodotto svizzero. Il progetto e' poi finito negli USA dove Mr.Lear ha creato il Lear Jet.

La Svezia ha tenuto duro per i decenni della Guerra Fredda producendo la totalita' degli aerei necessari per le proprie Forze aeree. Esportazioni poche, pero'. Austria e Finlandia per il Draken che ha perso in Svizzera con il Mirage III.

Per SAAB con il Gripen siamo alla frutta... da vari anni. Per motivi di lavoro televisivo sono stato a Linkoeping a tre riprese. Argomento il SAAB 2000 per Crossair. Dirigenti ammettevano l' importanza enorme dei costi di progettazione militare e svicolavano sull' argomento esportazione. Per la produzione civile, infine, il fallimento e' stato totale. Per quella di jet da combattimento si aggrappano al Gripen. A prima vista potrebbe anche essere un buon apparecchio da seconda linea per aeronautiche di una certa importanza ma lo penalizza il costo.

Esiste anche il problema del costo del lavoro. La Svizzera non e' la Turchia. L' ex boss di Pilatus O.Schwenk lo diceva spesso. Con una razionalizzazione del lavoro e una robotizzazione spinta l' azienda puo' ancora permettersi di produrre aerei in Svizzera, nonostante che da decenni gli stipendi siano i piu' alti del mondo. Il prodotto deve avere un grande valore aggiunto altrimenti...

La Svezia attuale non e' piu' quella della seconda meta' del secolo scorso. SAAB, ristrutturata a piu' riprese, e' ormai un conglomerato tecnologico di molte attivita' meno mirate al settore originario dell' aviazione.
