Brazilian-made wide area and head-up displays for the Saab Gripen E/F will be offered to all customers of the single-engined fighter as a potential cockpit upgrade, says Mikael Franzén, head of Business Unit, Gripen Brazil.

The Brazilian air force’s $5.4 billion order for 36 Gripen fighters includes several changes from the Swedish air force version.

Instead of three multifunction displays, the FAB selected a 19in by 8in wide-area touchscreen made by AEL Sistemas (*), an Elbit Systems subsidiary based in Brazil.

Saab all'opera in Brasile ...

A Saab aerostructures plant now under construction in Brazil to support Gripen fighter production also will expand the capacity of Saab’s global supply chain, the Swedish manufacturer says on 9 May (*).

The company is now setting up the office for the 5,000-square-meter facility operated by the Saab Aeronáutica Montagens (SAM), in São Bernardo do Campo, a suburb of São Paulo, says Marcelo Lima, SAM's director-general.

The ownership of SAM will be controlled by Saab with a 90% share.

São Jose dos Campos-based Akaer, an engineering services company founded by former Embraer engineers, owns 10% of SAM.

Saab has launched the next generation of its formidable RBS15 anti-ship missile series for international sale, with a little help from Norse mythology.
Unveiling its latest evolution of the strike weapon at the Farnborough air show, the Swedish manufacturer is offering the product under the "Gungnir" family banner.
This name refers to the spear of the god Odin – which was unstoppable and never missed its target, the company says.
Developed in partnership with Diehl Defence, the latest evolution of the long-range weapon, more formally designated the RBS15 Mk4 Air, is for future integration with Saab's Gripen E.

Today the flight envelope is being expanded, with 9g being achieved earlier this month, according to the company. 
Test pilot Marcus Wandt explained that although the aircraft is heavier than the Gripen C, “the agility is still there because it’s stronger and carries its weight very well.” 
Wandt and his five colleagues have flown 125 test hours.
