Italy Buys Turrets To Protect Pumas

Italy is to equip its Puma patrol vehicles with remote-controlled turrets after deaths caused by Pumas overturning.

The Italian Army ordered a first batch of 19 Hitrole 12.7mm machine gun turrets from local firm Oto Melara in December, with deliveries by June for installation on the six-wheeled versions of its light scout Puma vehicles.

The turret will replace an open hatch with a manned machine gun, thus avoiding the need to leave a soldier exposed during dangerous patrols.

In May 2006, an Italian soldier manning the gun of a Puma patrolling near Kabul was killed when a roadside bomb turned the vehicle over.

The army also is planning to add 120 kilograms of extra armor to the sides and undersides of its Pumas, but industry and military officials said the extra armor was limited in preventing vehicles from turning over under the impact of explosions. The new turret, however, would be instrumental in saving the lives of soldiers otherwise perched in the hatch.

The Puma was built by Oto Melara and Iveco, and is fit for the Hitrole turret.

“The turret is light enough, at 200 kilograms, to be removed in a few hours if the mission does not require it,” said an official at Oto Melara, which is a unit of Finmeccanica, based here.

The turret holds two daytime TV cameras — one for close range, one for wide-range viewing — and an infrared camera, a laser range finder and a laser illuminator. The operator sits in a fixed position below the turret, controlling it with a joystick and monitor. A periscope for viewing is offered as an option on the turret but was not ordered by the Italian Army.

The turret can elevate to 50 degrees and turn through 50 degrees a second.

Scusate la leggera indignazione, nonostante la buona notizia, riguardo all'italica usanza di porre rimedio al problema rigorosamente dopo non meno di un incidente mortale.
