Lockheed Martin hopes to select a new radar for the US Air Force's F-16 Combat Avionics Programmed Extension Suite (CAPES) programme between July and August, a company official says.

Lockheed will provide the radar for the USAF upgrade programme as contractor furnished equipment.

Air Guardsmen and F-16s Train with Polish Air Force ....

 

Six F-16s and nearly 100 airmen from the Wisconsin Air National Guard's 115th Fighter Wing in Madison are training alongside their Polish air force counterparts during a two-week deployment to Lask AB, Poland, according to US officials.

This is the first rotation of F-16s to Lask since the standup of the US aviation detachment in Poland last November, states a May 16 release from the detachment.

This exchange, which runs through May 24, is meant to enhance the skills of US and Polish F-16 pilots through flying simulated air combat scenarios with other aircraft, including Polish MiG-29s and Su-22s.

"We're doing things like air combat maneuvers, basic fighter maneuvers, and tactical intercepts," said Lt. Col. Brian Parker, 176th Fighter Squadron commander.

"It's a building-block approach, so we'll start out with the basics and increase the tactics as we go through the two weeks," he said.

The next fighter exchange is slated for July when F-16s from Aviano AB, Italy, come to Poland for air-to-ground training, states the release.

In February, airmen from Ramstein AB, Germany conducted the first rotation of C-130Js to Powidz Air Base a part of the aviation detachment's activities.

Un articolo apparso su “Aranysas”(rivista ungherese), proprio questo mese, parla dei risultati ottenuti nelle esercitazioni dai MiG-29 polacchi contro gli F-16 tra il 2008 e il 2009. Durante uno di questi “duelli” , 2 F-16 hanno affrontato 4 MiG-29. Lo scontro è avvenuto sul medio raggio con il lancio di missili R-27 ed AIM-120 simulati. Sorpresa : con tattiche adeguate entrambe le parti hanno subito perdite. Ulteriori “scontri” hanno dimostrato che i missili R-27, seppur vulnerabili alle ECM e alle manovre “beaming”, si sono rivelati molto più efficaci di quanto ritenuto. E i missili AMRAAM non sempre miracolosi. Solo quando sono intervenuti gli E-3 in appoggio agli F-16, i combattimenti non hanno lasciato scampo ai MiG-29. I piloti degli F-16 hanno chiarito che non disponevano, a quel tempo, di disturbatori attivi interni.

Mmm.. una simulazione poco realistica mi pare, anche se in effetti di più non si può fare senza sparare veramente.

Mi ricordo di droni QF-4 che tornavano a casa con missili (privi di carica) conficcati addosso e venivano poi riparati... stessa sorte che toccherà presto agli F-16 trasformati in QF-16... a livello di simulazione quella era abbastanza realistica ma non sempre andava bene e i QF-4 tornavano a casa, e in quel caso, chi sparava il missile (di solito le compagnie produttrici di missili che "noleggiavano" i QF-4 per fare i test) doveva poi pagare i danni... ma in una esercitazione, dove spari contro un pilota e non un pilota "in remoto" non credo ci sia tutta sta necessità di impiegare armamenti reali. Per questo si usano quei software, che non sono poi così poco realistici

Ho visto questo documentario molte volte, e quando inquadrano gli schermi degli AWACS si vede sto sofware che riproduce sia i missili, sia i colpi di cannone in un dogfight che vede protagonista proprio l' F-16...

Fosse per me io sparerei per davvero, ma a me hanno ritirato la patente.

Visto Top Gun? Quando si rivedevano e commentavano insieme i combattimenti e gli errori della giornata?

Su questo F-14 si vedono un pod ACMI (arancio) e un missile (credo) in versione CATM (captive air training missile); in questo caso un AIM-9. Il missile ha solo la testa cercante reale, per il resto serve per addestrarsi ad usarlo e trasmette i dati di ingaggio. Tutti i dati (telemetria, ...) sono registrati a bordo, trasmessi a terra in tempo reale e registrati per essere rivisti e commentati.

An F-16 assigned to the 309th Fighter Squadron at Luke AFB, Ariz., crashed in field just west of the base around 7 p.m. on June 26. Both pilots safely ejected; neither was injured, according to a base release. The pilots were conducting a routine training mission at the time of the incident. Brig. Gen. Michael Rothstein, 56th Fighter Wing commander, praised the members of Luke’s police and fire departments which responded to the crash. “An incident like this highlights the close cooperation between our fire and emergency services and their counterparts in the surrounding community,” said Rothstein in the release. The Air Force has not released a cause of the accident, which remains under investigation, but Fox News has reported a bird strike may be to blame.

The budget sequester that compelled the Air Force to slash flying hours 30 percent this summer is making it tougher to maintain safety, but it’s too soon to say whether a recent spike in aircraft crashes is a direct result of the situation, Air Combat Command chief Gen. Mike Hostage said in a June 27 interview. There have been 14 class A aircraft mishaps—meaning more than $1 million each in damage—so far in Fiscal 2013, including five that involved F-16s, said Darlene Cowsert with the Air Force Safety Center. The latest F-16 crash occurred on June 26 just outside Luke AFB, Ariz. Both pilots ejected safely and were not hurt in that accident. “Clearly,” Hostage said, the sequester “exacerbates our challenge of safe, effective operations. Any time you reduce the amount of flying time that these youngsters get, that reduces their proficiency; you run a higher level of risk.” ACC is studying any potential correlation, he said, and while “I’d love to be able to tell you, yeah, sequester is the cause of this [and] we’ve got to stop it right now…I can’t do that, yet,” he said. Although he’s not ready to say that the flying standdowns are “costing us airplanes and costing us lives…We may have that kind of data at some point downstream,” he added. Aircraft accidents are now theprimary cause of combat-related deaths in Afghanistan now that fighting is winding down, reported McClatchy in May.

An Israeli air force Lockheed Martin F-16I "Sufa" crashed in the Mediterranean sea 27nm (50km) off the coast of the Gaza Strip during a training flight on 7 July.

The two crew members ejected and were picked up from the water by helicopters from the service's 669 rescue unit about 50min later. Both were flown to hospital and are in a good condition.

First indications point to a sudden malfunction of the combat aircraft's engine, with the pilots reportedly having tried unsuccessfully to restart it before ejecting.

Air force chief Maj Gen Amir Eshel temporarily suspended training flights involving the service's remaining F-16Is and Boeing F-15I strike aircraft until an initial inquiry into the failure has been completed. Both types are powered by the Pratt & Whitney F100-229 engine.

The accident reduces the air force's active inventory of two-seat F-16Is to 99 aircraft, according toFlightglobal's MiliCAS database.

 

It is the third loss to have involved the Israeli variant, following a fatal crash in November 2010 and a landing gear failure in 1996.

F-16 pilots and ground crews from Aviano AB, Italy, are training in realistic wartime scenarios with their Polish counterparts at Lask AB, Poland, according to US Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa officials. This training is occurring as part of the third rotation of US air assets to Poland since the standup of the US aviation detachment at Lask in November. "Poland is a pretty new NATO player," said Capt. Brad Zimmerman of Aviano's 510th Fighter Squadron, in a July 16 USAFE release. "Building relationships, like what we're doing with this training, ensures we are a reliable force against aggressors," he said."We have very similar procedures but different tactics," said Polish air force Lt. Col. Pawel Marcinkowski, 6th Fighter Squadron commander. "Each time we have the Americans over, we learn something new. We begin to know what to expect and are not surprised when we fly together," he said. The training began on July 15 and continues until July 26. (Lask report by SSgt. US government delays F-16 deliveries to Egypt ....

 

The US government will delay deliveries of Lockheed Martin F-16 fighters to the government of Egypt, the Pentagon said on 24 July.

"Given the current situation in Egypt, we do not believe it is appropriate to move forward with the delivery of F-16s at this time," the US Department of Defense says.

Direi che non e' appropriato davvero.. l'esercito ha appena minacciato i fratelli musulmani (che rivogliono Morsi): 48 ore per allinearvi, poi se fate terrorismo spariamo...

 

Visto che e' in corso un temporaneo governo militare ottenuto grazie al colpo di stato (da loro definito legittimo perche' voluto dal popolo), mi sa' che si dovra' aspettare un assestamento della situazione prima di procedere all'acquisizione.. pero' pensandocci ora che i militari sono al governo potrebbero fare shopping, anche se la situazione interna lascia poco spazio a distrazioni.

Upgrade per i riservisti:

 

 

The F-16 Block 30 airplanes assigned to Air Force Reserve Command's 482nd Fighter Wing at Homestead ARB, Fla., are receiving new avionics under a project called Software Component Upgrade 8, according to a unit release. The work began on the jets in March, states Homestead's July 25 release. Each F-16 is getting a new center display unit in the cockpit to improve the pilot's situational awareness and a helmet-mounted integrated targeting system to reduce the time it takes to engage a target, states the release. SCU-8 is "probably the biggest single leap forward that we've had in the Block 30," said Lt. Col. Adam Meyers, the wing's safety chief. He said the CDU will present data to the pilot in a manner such that "it becomes knowledge . . . instead of just a jumbled mess on a screen." Meanwhile, "HMIT gives the pilot the ability to look over his shoulder, at either an airborne or surface target, and cue a weapon against it as quickly as he can move his head," said Meyers. Northrop Grumman’s SABR wins USAF F-16 AESA upgrade bid ....

 

Lockheed Martin has selected Northrop Grumman's Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) for the US Air Force's F-16 upgrade programme.

The service had delegated the decision on selecting between the SABR and the Raytheon Advanced Combat Radar (RACR) to Lockheed last year.

Qualche dettaglio tecnico sul nuovo radar?

Il materiale disponibile su internet è facilmente reperibile anche se ha un valore e una completezza relativi quando si parla di equipaggiamenti così delicati e sensibili come i radar.

 

Forse interessante è questo video, che in modo semplice mette in evidenza i vantaggi del SABR proprio come upgrade, per la facilità di installazione e l’assenza di rilevanti modifiche al velivolo, aspetto essenziale quando si interviene su velivoli già prodotti.

E’ comunque ormai caccia aperta all’upgrade delle migliaia di F-16 costruiti e in lizza resta sempre anche il RACR di Raytheon che è invece stato appena scelto dalla Corea del Sud.

Collisione in volo ....

 

Two F-16Cs Collide Mid-Air ....

 

Two F-16Cs assigned to the District of Columbia Air National Guard’s 113th Wing collided mid-air around 11 p.m. on Aug. 1 during a routine training mission off the coast of Chincoteague, Va..

The Coast Guard recovered one pilot who safely ejected from his aircraft.

The other aircraft was able to return to JB Andrews, Md.

Both pilots were transferred to an Andrews medical facility—one was released and the other has since been moved to an offsite medical facility for minor injuries, states the Aug. 2 release.

The cause of the mishap remains under investigation.
