Quote

“I’m not sure I’d characterize Air-to-Air refueling (AAR) itself as risky.
Rather, I always thought of it as requiring strict attention to the slight but significant changes taking place as you approach, engage, and then maintain position on the drogue.”
That’s what former USMC F-4 Phantom II pilot, combat veteran, author and Stanford graduate John Trotti told TheAviationist.com about midair refueling using the drogue and probe system employed by U.S. Marine Aircraft.
Trotti’s remarks, both as a former USMC fighter pilot and perhaps more significantly even, as a subject matter expert and published author, are relevant to the discussion of this week’s loss of a USMC F-35B over the Coachella Valley in California.

Sanzionate la Turchia !!!

Quote

A bipartisan pair of U.S. senators are urging the Trump administration to impose economic sanctions on Turkey over buying and activating Russian S-400 Triumf air defense systems, concerned that Turkey is allowing Russia to access sensitive data on NATO aircraft.
In an Oct. 7 letter to Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo, Senate appropriators Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) raised concerns that Turkey may have used its S-400s “to detect U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets returning from the Eunomia exercise” held in August.
The exercise involving Cyprus, France, Greece, and Italy was a “response to Turkey’s unwarranted aggression in the Eastern Mediterranean,” the lawmakers said.
Turkey had sent oil exploration vessels into disputed areas around Cyprus.

By the end of 2020, F-35 fighter jets rolling off Lockheed Martin’s production line will be equipped with a modified lightning protection system that will fix problems discovered earlier this year, the company’s head of production said.
In June, the government’s F-35 Joint Program Office imposed flight restrictions on the F-35A conventional-takeoff-and-landing variant — the model used by the U.S. Air Force and most international customers — after the Air Force discovered an issue with the Onboard Inert Gas Generation System.

To boot, President Donald Trump’s senior adviser Jared Kushner’s secret push to sell the F-35 and other advanced arms has caused confusion and frustration among agencies and congressional committees that would normally be involved in such a sale but have been left in the dark

https://www.defensenews.com/congress/2020/09/24/top-us-lawmakers-voice-support-for-israels-military-edge-amid-f-35-sale/

How would the administration ensure the F-35′s sensitive technology isn’t threatened by the UAE’s ties to China (which sold it Wing Loong drones) and Russia (which is selling it the Sukhoi Su-35 fighter, the Pantsir S-1 missile defense system and the Kornet-E anti-tank missile system)? Has the UAE agreed to terminate cooperation and purchases with Russia and China in exchange for the F-35?

Il "pacco di sopravvivenza" ... ?

Quote

Arctic survival kits are the newest feature on the Air Force’s F-35A Joint Strike Fighters at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska.
The F-35 was not designed to carry sleeping bags and other equipment to protect pilots if they need to eject into the brutal Arctic temperatures, which regularly dip to -40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder.
Alaska-based Airmen had to figure out how to fit roughly 10 pounds of survival gear into a 5-pound sack attached to the F-35’s ejection seat.
After months of research and testing, the 354th Operations Group commander approved the final kit, which includes survival tools such as a knife for gathering food, a poncho to stay dry, and flares to alert rescue crews to a downed pilot’s location.
“Due to the smaller size of the seat, we are limited on how many items we can pack in here,” Staff Sgt. Ross Dugger, a 354th Operations Support Squadron aircrew flight equipment craftsman, said in a release (*).

Quote

We still don't know much about what exactly caused the collision between a KC-130J and an F-35B, both Marine Corps aircraft taking part in the Weapons Tactics Instructor course out of MCAS Yuma, Arizona, near the Salton Sea in Southern California on September 29th, 2020.
What we do know is the KC-130J crew did an incredible job keeping their cool and getting the badly damaged aircraft on the ground, a farmer's field near the town of Thermal, with all of its occupants alive.
The Hercules tanker-transport, which belongs to VMGR-352 'Raiders,' has since been partially disassembled and moved to Jacqueline Cochran Airport in Thermal and our friend and contributor Matt Hartman grabbed some shots of it.

Pacific Air Forces commander Gen. Kenneth S. Wilsbach has some advice for users of the F-35 in his region: Don’t use it like the aircraft you’re used to, but take advantage of its full potential.
Speaking at an AFA Mitchell Institute virtual event Oct. 27, Wilsbach said the U.S. Air Force operated the F-22 like the F-15C for “about five years,” failing to fully exploit its fifth-generation stealth and sensor fusion capabilities.
“It took us a while to learn” what the jet could really do, he said, and now, “the tactics are completely different.”
He advises the F-35 partners to use the aircraft “like an F-35,” and not like some of the high-performance fourth-generation aircraft they have been operating.
“Take advantage of the lessons learned that we’ve had,” he said.
“Skip right to that … and cycle through those lessons learned that much faster. Take full advantage of the platform.”
