USMC ... avanti gli F-35C ...

Quote

The Marine Corps is accelerating its F-35C carrier variant Joint Strike Fighter procurement and slowing its F-35B vertical landing variant to support Navy deployment requirements, the Marines’ top aviator told lawmakers today.
In its Fiscal Year 2020 budget request the Marines asked for 10 fewer F-35Bs; in the budget’s projection for outyears, the service dropped its planned F-35B buys by five F-35Bs in 2021 and three in FY 2022.
For the F-35C, though, the service increased its request by nine planes in the five-year Future Years Defense Program.
Lt. Gen. Steven Rudder, deputy commandant of the Marine Corps for aviation, told the House Armed Services tactical air and land forces subcommittee that those changes were meant to support upcoming deployments.

F-35C ... i Marines fanno progressi ...

Quote

On January 21, the first Lockheed Martin F-35C joined the Third Marine Air Wing at MCAS Miramar, California.
The aircraft is assigned to VMFA-314 “Black Knights,” the first Marine squadron to operate the carrier-capable version.
The Corps is acquiring a total of 80 F-35Cs, which will equip four operational squadrons, each with 10 aircraft.
Others will be used for training and as a reserve.
The “Black Knights” - with a long and distinguished operational career - are no strangers to introducing new types, having been the first Marine unit to fly the F-4 Phantom in 1962, and in 1983 became the first unit in any service to adopt the F/A-18A Hornet.
Having flown its last Hornet missions in June 2019, the squadron has been training on the F-35C throughout the latter half of the year with the joint Navy/Marines Fleet Replenishment Squadron (VFA-125 “Rough Raiders”) at NAS Lemoore, California, from where the aircraft was flown into Miramar.
A number of Marine F-35Cs have already been delivered to VFA-125 and the training unit (VFA-101 “Grim Reapers”) at Eglin AFB, Florida, to aid the conversion process.

The US Marine Corps (USMC) believes it needs to be leaner and meaner to defeat China in a hypothetical war in the Pacific Ocean.
Over the next 10 years, the service plans to drastically downsize its force, cutting 12,000 personnel and reducing its number of aircraft, including a significant number of its bespoke Lockheed Martin F-35B stealth fighters, Bell Boeing MV-22 tiltrotors and Sikorsky CH-53 heavy lift helicopters.

The U.S. Marine Corps prides itself in its reputation as the “First to Fight” in any clime and place.
While 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing is a significant part of America’s force in readiness, it does not fly or fight alone.
In an effort to ensure fellow pilots are trained and equipped with the latest in 5th Generation stealth technology, 3rd MAW’s Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 122 and VMFA-211 recently delivered eight F-35B Lightning IIs to 1st MAW’s VMFA-121 in Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan.
VMFA-121 permanently relocated from MCAS Yuma, Arizona, to MCAS Iwakuni in 2017 after becoming the Corps’ first operational F-35B squadron in 2012.
As a forward-deployed squadron in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command area of operations, it is imperative that the “Green Knights” have access to the most modern aviation weapon systems available.

Quote

This week a squadron of Marine F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters wrapped up nearly two months of training aboard the U.K. Royal Navy HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08), paving the way for U.S. and U.K. fighters to operate interchangeably when the British aircraft carrier leaves on its first deployment.
The “Wake Island Avengers” of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 211 and the Royal Air Force’s 617 Squadron “The Dambusters” used the recent drills to demonstrate the countries can seamlessly fight and maintain the F-35Bs from the carrier.
During a recent interview with USNI News, VMFA-211 commanding officer Lt. Col. Joseph Freshour detailed how the squadrons flew combinations of aircraft, shared parts and performed integrated maintenance throughout the last few weeks.

1968 ... la battaglia di Huế ...

Le armi ...

Cita

It was the first taste of city fighting for the Marines since Seoul, and it was a battle they were not trained to fight.
They had, by early 1968, experienced everything that jungle warfare had to offer, but combat in an urban environment presented another matter entirely.
Nevertheless, the fight that developed in the streets of Hue would give the Marine Corps one of its most memorable victories - a victory that marked the end of the Tết Offensive as well as a turning point in the war in Vietnam.
It started during the pre-dawn darkness of Jan. 30, when the Tết Nguyên Đán lunar new year uprising struck hundreds of military installations, towns and provincial capitals across South Vietnam.

Cita

A U.S. Marine MV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor with four aboard crashed on Friday during a training mission in Arctic Norway, local officials said.
The Osprey was reported missing after it failed to arrive at Norwegian Air Force Base Bodø by 6 p.m. (1 p.m. East Coast time), according to the Armed Forces and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of Northern Norway.
The Osprey’s last known whereabouts were over the Saltfjellet mountains – a vast range about less than 100 miles south of the airbase, according to Norwegian officials.

Cita

The Marines broke a record on Sunday when they loaded the most 16 F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters ever aboard a big-deck amphibious warship.
Under cloudy skies on Sunday afternoon, deck sailors directed Marine pilots onto launching spots and maneuvered others into parking spots on the flight deck USS Tripoli (LHA-7), the Navy’s newest big deck amphibious warship, with more coming later this week.
The fighters belong to two operational squadrons — the “Vikings” of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 225 and the “Wake Island Avengers” of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211, both based at Yuma Marine Corps Air Station, Ariz. – and to Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1, based at Yuma and New River, N.C.
The Marine Corps is fielding the advanced, multi-mission aircraft to replace its older F/A-18 Hornet and AV-8B Harrier jets.
But bringing more than a dozen of the F-35B jets aboard Tripoli for flight operations – a number that could grow to 18 or 20 this week – along with 500 Marines isn’t just about breaking records and a photo opportunity, military officials told USNI News.
Rather, the week-long MAG-13 training event with Tripoli is the start of identifying and building capabilities for the big deck and its crew and for Marines and their jets to conduct integrated MAG-level operations at sea, something that hasn’t been done in a generation.

Cita

On May 17, 2022 Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 242 achieved Full Operational Capability (FOC) and is now ready to support the full complement of its missions.
A significant part of this milestone is the establishment of 32 F-35B aircraft permanently forward-based as part of Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 12, ready to support a free and open Indo-Pacific.
This transition occurred on schedule per the annual Marine Corps aviation plan.
The F-35 Lightning II aircraft represents the future of Marine Corps tactical aviation and will eventually replace the AV-8B Harrier, the F/A-18 Hornet, and the EA-6B Prowler in all units across the Marine Corps.
On October 16, 2020, VMFA-242, known as Bats, was re-designated as an F-35B squadron and on September 9, 2021, the squadron attained Initial Operational Capability (IOC).
