Eurocopter Faces Outcry After Super Puma Accident ....

 

.... unions and workers were quick to react to the fifth Super Puma accident or major incident in four years in the UK offshore industry.

“This is the second [super Puma crash] resulting in fatalities. It’s unacceptable and it can’t go on,” Unite Scottish secretary Pat Rafferty said.

Meanwhile, a “Destroy the Super Pumas” Facebook page has gathered more than 36,000 “likes” and some 11,000 people who no longer want to fly on Super Pumas have signed a petition.

Dai sopravvissuti finora non viene menzionata alcuna indicazione sulle cause. Una rottura di trasmissione credo si senta... E se non è la tramissione, non credo ci siano stati molti altri problemi ricorrenti noti, è una macchina stracollaudata. D'altra parte, non sembra ci fossero condizioni meteo pericolose. Un bel dilemma

The UK Air Accident Investigation Branch has released initial information about the Eurocopter Super Puma AS332L2 accident off Sumburgh, in the Shetland Isles, Scotland.

Operating restrictions that have grounded operations using Eurocopter Super Puma models in the UK have been lifted following a two-day meeting of the pan-industry Helicopter Safety Steering Group.

The withdrawal of the AS332L/L1, L2 and EC225s from service followed a fatal accident involving an L2 near Sumburgh, Shetland Isles on 23 August.

Questa non la capisco. Non hanno una spiegazione, ma lo fanno volare subito. Capisco se le condizioni meteo fossero state proibitive, ma come fanno a escludere che sia ancora stata la trasmissione? La perdita improvvisa di potenza di cui parlano è più logico supporre che venga da un problema di trasmissione che da una doppia avaria motore. A meno che abbiano già ispezionato la trasmissione, che è già stata recuperata, ma allora l'avrebbero detto.

La CAA britannica (UK Civil Aviation Authority) appoggia la decisione che autorizza la ripresa dei voli dei Super Puma ....

At about two miles from the runway threshold the helicopter was approximately 240 feet below the vertical approach profile, with a rate of descent of about 500 feet per minute, and an airspeed of 68 knots.
The airspeed continued to reduce to below 30 knots and as it did so the helicopter pitched increasingly nose-up. The rate of descent remained constant for a period, before increasing rapidly. Shortly thereafter the helicopter, which was intact, struck the sea in a near level pitch attitude with a slight right bank. Both engines were delivering power until impact.

North Sea offshore operators could face fundamental changes - including reducing the number of passengers carried in each aircraft - depending on the outcome of a root-and-branch review of helicopter transportation safety.

Launched in the wake of the 23 August fatal accident of a CHC Scotia-operated Eurocopter AS332L2, the study has been commissioned by pan-industry body the Helicopter Safety Steering Group.
