The international community keeps a close watch on China's security policy and its military trends. The Japanese public has been increasingly aware of the large impact of China's rising military (and economic) power that may have a huge impact on Japanese security.

China, now the second largest economy in the world, has become an essentially important economic partner for Japan and other East Asian countries. At the same time, its rapid economic growth allows China to multiply its military spending and move forward with the modernization of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The NIDS China Security Report analyzes the strategic and military trends of China.

Japan plans to spend $2.1 billion on its military over the next few months as part of a huge stimulus package, a defense ministry official said Jan. 9, amid growing concerns over a rising China.

The cash is in addition to the regular military spending for 2012-13 and is separate from a boosted budget request for next fiscal year that ruling party policy makers called for on Jan.8.

“We will request 180.5 billion yen to be allocated to military spending from a stimulus package,” a defense ministry spokesman told AFP, adding that some of the cash will be used to buy PAC-3 surface-to-air anti-ballistic missile systems and modernize four F-15 fighter jets.

The request for funds has to be approved by the finance ministry before being officially included in the stimulus the government is set to announce later this month, reportedly worth 13.1 trillion yen for this fiscal year to March.

The announcement came a day after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party said Japan will increase military spending for the first time in 11 years next fiscal year starting from April.

Japan is involved in a territorial tussle with China over a group of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea.

Beijing has sent vessels to the area dozens of times and late last year dispatched a plane.

Nerves in Tokyo have also been rattled by an unpredictable North Korea.

It sent a rocket over Japan’s southern islands last month in what it insisted was a satellite launch. Tokyo and its allies said the launch was a covert ballistic missile test.

“Out of 180.5 billion yen, the defense ministry plans to use 60.5 billion yen to prepare for the changing security environment surrounding Japan,” the spokesman said.

The defense ministry also plans to purchase three SH-60K patrol helicopters and to add a battery for an intermediate-range ballistic missile system, he said.

“We need to update our equipment as the security environment surrounding Japan is becoming harsher as North Korea has test-launched missiles twice in the last year and tensions with China continue,” he said.

Under usual precedent, 70 percent to 80 percent of a defense order must be spent with domestic firms, although this is not a legal requirement, he said.

US, Japan Strengthen Partnership ....

 

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel last month announced the formation of a defense intelligence-surveillance-reconnaissance working group with Japan "to deepen cooperation in this area" between the two nations.

The announcement came following his April 29 meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera at the Pentagon.

Both nations' militaries have identified ISR as a "critical priority," Hagel told reporters during a joint press conference with Onodera there that day.

The two defense ministers also discussed ways to monitor and respond, if necessary, to North Korean provocations.

"Today, we made progress on plans to deploy a second TPY-2 radar to Japan, which will help protect both of our nations from the threat of North Korean ballistic missiles," said Hagel.

"The United States remains steadfast in our defense commitments to Japan, included extending deterrence and a further nuclear umbrella," he added.

Japan’s 2014 defense budget request asks for a 3% increase over the 2013 budget, continuing the sudden upward trend set in motion by right-wing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe upon his December 2012 return to power.

The previous center-left government planned a 1.3% decrease in defense spending, which had already seen 10 consecutive contractions since 2003.

Two dozen members of the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force became the first paratroopers from their country to take part in a training jump from an American forces plane over U.S. soil.

The jump took place Wednesday over interior Alaska as paratroopers from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and Japan took part in the training exercise.

As the troops landed at the Donnelly Training Area drop zone near Fort Greeley, Alaska, there was a simulated battle for control of a landing strip.

Ci sarà un disimpegno progressivo dall'Asia Pacifico come promesso durante la campagna elettorale o manterrà una continuità con l'amministrazione attuale?

Da che mi ricordo io Trump e la Cina non sono certo amici per la pelle dal momento che la ritiene il nuovo impero del male, causa dei mali economici del mondo. C'è stata pure la telefonata a Taiwan.

Mettere dazi alle merci cinesi non è in conflitto con il disimpegno militare dall'Asia Pacifico.

 

Su Taiwan, certo che questo Trump è davvero imprevedibile. Ancora deve salire al commando e già crea incidenti quasi-diplomatici.

Allora anche qui, a Trump toccherà ridimensionare le promesse fatte in campagna elettorale. (Come sta già facendo su altri punti). Aveva detto che difenderà gli alleati solo se questi si accolleranno il 100% delle spese delle basi americane. Infatti dopo l'elezione di Trump, il ministro della difesa giapponese ha dichiarato che il Giappone non pagherà un centesimo di più di quello che paga già. Però a quanto pare costa di più agli USA tenere quelle truppe in casa che non in Giappone, a meno che intendano scioglierle una volta accasati.

Vedremmo cosa farà Trump fra qualche mese.

Anzi, se mai dovessero distendersi i rapporti con la Russia e ci fosse l'effettivo impegno dei Paesi NATO nella spesa militare che Trump auspica, l'impegno nel Pacifico potrebbe anche aumentare. Stava già succedendo qualche annetto fa, quando Obama iniziava a ritirare caccia dall'Europa con lo sguardo al Pacifico. Il tempo di pensarlo e ci siamo ritrovati la Crimea invasa e il Medio Oriente in fiamme quindi non se ne fece nulla. Trump non parla il politichese, è un uomo che si esprime senza mezzi termini. Per questo si arriva a situazioni simili.

 

Edit; Hai risposto mentre scrivevo. Trump disse che la difesa degli alleati NATO non è automatica se questi ultimi non sono disposti a investire maggiormente. Il che, tradotto, vuol dire: crescete, non state sempre alla speranza nostra, e investite (in armamenti USA). eh eh eh.

Sicuro che su Ucraina e Siria, la Russia non stia giocando in difesa?

Cmq la Germania aumenterà le spese militari, sul lungo periodo potrebbe anche essere auspicabile se si vuole ottenere un UE più integrata e indipendente.

E se invece degli armamenti USA, si fa rete fra le aziende di difesa europee per sfornare mezzi europei come un bel caccia di 5th gen?

Basta solo recuperare un gap sul know how che si basa su anni contati in decine e metterlo in servizio fra altre decine quando ormai sarà superato. Giusto per ripetere la storia ciclicamente secondo il machiavellico pensiero.
