NASA Sends Birthday Wishes To Astronaut John Glenn

 

WASHINGTON -- NASA commemorates the 90th birthday of astronaut John Glenn. The pioneering explorer was the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the Earth and also was the oldest person to fly to space when he launched on the space shuttle in 1998.

 

"John Glenn is a legend, and NASA sends him our best wishes on this major personal milestone," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "John's legacy and contributions to the continued progress of human spaceflight are immense. His example is one we continue to emulate as we push toward farther destinations in the solar system."

 

After a distinguished flying career with the Marines in World War II and Korea, Glenn joined NASA in 1959 as one of the country's first astronauts in Project Mercury. On Feb. 20, 1962, Glenn piloted the Mercury-Atlas 6 "Friendship 7" spacecraft on the first U.S. manned orbital mission. He launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida to successfully complete three orbits of the Earth.

 

Glenn flew to space again on the the STS-95 mission in 1998 aboard the space shuttle Discovery. As a mission specialist, Glenn supported deployment of a variety of research payloads and participated in investigations about spaceflight and the aging process.

Today, July 18, 2011, is John Glenn's 90th birthday.

 

On Feb. 20, 1962 at 9:47 am EST, Glenn launched from Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 14 to become the first American to orbit the Earth. In this image, Glenn enters his Friendship 7 capsule with assistance from technicians to begin his historic flight.

Before joining NASA, Glenn already had a distinguished career as a pilot, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, Navy Unit Commendation for service in Korea, the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy's Astronaut Wings, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, among others.

Glenn rejoined NASA in 1998 as a member of the STS-95 Discovery crew. This 9-day mission, from Oct. 29-Nov. 7, supported a variety of research payloads including deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope Orbital Systems Test Platform and investigations on space flight and the aging process.

Parlando di Jonh Glenn, leggetevi "la stoffa giusta", è un libro che parla del programma mercury, ma più che altro della loro vita e rapporti...

Jonh era invidioso di Alan Shepard per il fatto che il primo volo del programma spettava ad Al, perché pensava che lui fosse il "ricordato nella storia" essendo il primo americano nello spazio, pensava che nessuno si sarebbe ricordato di lui...invece è l' opposto.

.... lo avevo letto nel 1981 nell'edizione allora pubblicata da "Sperling & Kupfer".

E' stato ristampato nei mesi scorsi da "Mondadori" nella collana "Gli Oscar" con una nuova traduzione ....

 

 

.... ed è facilmente reperibile.

 

Ben scritto e coinvolgente .... e racconta tanti retroscena .... sia sugli astronauti che sui piloti collaudatori ....

Dopo la recente scomparsa dell'astronauta Scott Carpenter .... passata pressoché inosservata (complice anche la protratta chiusura del sito della NASA) .... John Glenn è rimasto l'unico tuttora in vita dell'originario gruppo di 7 piloti spaziali del Progetto Mercury ....

Mercury Astronaut Scott Carpenter Dead at 88 ....

 

Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit the Earth, died on Oct. 10 in Denver reportedly due to complications from a recent stroke.

He was 88.

Born on May 1, 1925, in Boulder, Colo., Carpenter became a naval aviator, serving as a reconnaissance pilot during the Korean War.

He was selected in 1959 as one of the original seven Mercury astronauts, and on May 24, 1962, circled the Earth three times in the Aurora 7 spacecraft.

He later helped design the Apollo Lunar Landing Module, served as an aquanaut supporting Navy deep-water research, and trained astronauts underwater to prepare them for spacewalks.

He retired from the Navy in 1969, and later worked with French undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau.

In a statement, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said Carpenter "truly helped our nation progress in space from the earliest days to the world leadership we enjoy today."

Carpenter's death leaves John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, as the sole living member of the original seven Mercury astronauts.

Glenn Jr., U.S. Senator from Ohio, has his flight suit checked by closeout crew members before climbing into space shuttle Discovery for his second flight into space, which came 36 years after his Mercury launch. Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth.

Days before he died Thursday at age 95, John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, wrote a letter to another space enthusiast - Jeffrey P. Bezos - who has said watching the moon landing at age 5 was a seminal moment and one of the reasons he founded his space company, Blue Origin.

In the letter, which was presented to Bezos at an awards ceremony Thursday evening as part of the Smithsonian Magazine American Ingenuity Awards, Glenn wrote that in 1962, when he took his historic flight, "you were still two years from being born."

When Glenn returned to space in 1998 on a space shuttle mission at age 77, "you were already driven by a vision of space travel accessible not only to highly trained pilots and engineers and scientists, but to all of us," he wrote.

Questo il ricordo apparso questa mattina sul 'Daily Report' dell'AFA ...

 

Tom Wolfe 1931-2018

Tom Wolfe, the journalist and nonfiction author who wrote the book - and coined the term - “The Right Stuff,” died May 14, at age 87.

Wolfe’s book, published in 1979, stylistically chronicled the history and culture of US military test pilots, following their exploits through the end of the Mercury space program.

A film treatment of the same name with an ensemble cast, directed by Philip Kaufman, was released in 1983 to great critical acclaim, winning four technical Academy Awards.

The book and film caused the US to re-discover its rocketplane-era test pilots, particularly Chuck Yeager, who Wolfe portrayed as the prototypical cool-headed ace and aviator, and John Glenn, who in the same year as the film’s release unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for the US presidency.

Affecting a white suit and responsible in large part for the “new journalism” trend of writing factual stories in a novelistic fashion, which he called “literary journalism,” Wolfe also invented what he called “saturation journalism,” in which the reporter shadows his subject, usually a politician, for an extended period of time, to be on hand when major events take place involving that person.

He also famously wrote “The Bonfire of the Vanities” and coined the terms “The Me Decade” and “Radical Chic.”
