qui viene segnalato il "noto" problema (articolo dello scorso luglio) Rocket motor mystery continues to halt AMRAAM deliveries

Raytheon Missile Systems has not delivered an AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) in nearly two years because of an unexplained flaw in the missile's solid rocket motor.

The motors, supplied by ATK, have suffered mass failures when subjected to routine cold temperature tests. The issue has surprised and baffled ATK and Raytheon because the formulation and materials used to produce the rocket propellant fill have not changed – and have been in production, without incident, for more than 30 years. However, by late 2009 reliability problems had emerged with the ATK motors and now Raytheon says it has a stock of around 800 missiles that cannot be delivered. The US Depertment of Defense (DoD) has suspended payments to Raytheon until the rocket issues are solved and Raytheon admits that a final, reliable solution has yet to be found.

ATK's motors are failing a specific 'cold soak' test where the rockets are frozen to -65 degrees F (-54 degrees C) and then fired to prove they remain functional after carriage at high altitudes. ATK supplies motors in batches of 48 and the US practice is to test nine random examples from each batch.

E la risposta:

Stopped deliveries. IHS Jane’s reports that Raytheon has been unable to deliver any AIM-120 missiles for almost 2 years, because they keep failing cold firing tests designed to mimic temperatures at high altitudes. Raytheon and motor manufacturer ATK say that the materials and formulation haven’t changed in more than 30 years, but consistent test failures began in late 2009, and Raytheon reportedly has a stock of 800 undeliverable missiles.

Something, somewhere has changed, but what? Raytheon and ATK are highly motivated, as payments have been suspended until the problem is fixed. As of this date, they’re still looking for that fix. Raytheon’s official statement as of September 2012 is:

“Restoring AMRAAM to full production is a top priority for Raytheon, and has the full involvement of company leadership and our rocket motor suppliers. Raytheon has continued to produce AMRAAM guidance and control sections on schedule, while we wait for our primary supplier to deliver compliant rocket motors. All resources of Raytheon and our supplier, as well as government and other experts have been engaged to resolve the rocket motor manufacturing issues. We have developed a second rocket motor supplier that has begun to deliver. Raytheon recently delivered 132 AMRAAM all-up rounds to the U.S. Air Force. We continue to work closely with our rocket motor suppliers and our customer; we expect to be on track making additional significant missile deliveries to our customers before the end of the year.”

NASAMS USA. Raytheon IDS in Tewksbury, MA receives a $9.65 million cost-plus-incentive-fee contract for maintenance and sustainment services in support of the Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System. There is a NASAMS system guarding the USA’s National Capital region.

Work will be performed in Redstone Arsenal, AL, with an estimated completion date of Aug 30/13. One bid was solicited, with 1 bid received by US Army Contracting Command in Redstone Arsenal, AL (W31P4Q-12-C-0276).

e, recente, un ulteriore finanziamento

Raytheon in Tucson, AZ is being awarded a $6.4 million cost-plus fixed-fee contract to provide AMRAAM flight support.

Work will be performed in Tucson, AZ, and will run to the end of the fiscal year on Sept 30/13. The AFLCMC/EBAD at Eglin AFB, FL manages the contract (FA8675-13-C-0052)

At present, consistent problems with cold testing and AMRAAM rocket motors seem to have halted AMRAAM deliveries, and created almost a 2-year inventory backlog. Raytheon and ATK are puzzled, because the formulation for AMRAAM’s rocket propellant hasn’t changed, and neither has the rocket motor’s design. While they try to figure that out, Raytheon has found a 2nd rocket motor supplier, and is slowly resuming deliveries to the USAF.

Cita

The Air Force successfully tested its redesigned Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) Form, Fit, Function Refresh (F3R), firing the AIM-120D3 missile June 30 from an F-15E Strike Eagle at a target over the Gulf of Mexico near the Florida coast.
The first of five live-fire tests, it assessed a full hardware system redesign of early 2000s technology components in the Raytheon missile.
“The core objective of this test was to execute a long range shot that physically stressed the new missile hardware,” Maj. Heath Honaker, the 28th Test and Evaluation Squadron’s director of engineering and advanced programs, said in a statement provided to Air Force Magazine.
“Successful execution proves the redesigned hardware and software are progressing as expected and puts us one step closer to fielding a reliable, sustainable air-to-air capability to the warfighter,” Honaker added.

Missili AMRAAM per tutti ...

Cita

Raytheon Missiles and Defense won a $972 million contract to supply U.S. and other militaries with Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, or AMRAAMs.
Under the non-competitive, firm-fixed-price incentive modification to a previously-awarded contract (*), Raytheon will produce AMRAAMs for both the Air Force and Navy, as well as the militaries of 19 other countries including the U.K., Australia, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Japan.
Foreign military sales account for 42% of the contract’s value, the Pentagon said Tuesday.
Raytheon said this contract, for lot 36, is the first to consist entirely of AIM-120D3 and AIM-120C8 AMRAAMs with the latest form, fit, function refresh, or F3R, upgrades to software and hardware.
